PROJECT:

BIRKENLUND

LOCATION:

OLDENBURG / GERMANY

Spacious. Nordic. Open.

Brief: To transform a neglected 1960s house into a Scandinavian-inspired home, with an extensive garden area and space for a growing family.

To meet the challenge of this project, Maren worked with a local architect and builder to remodel the house’s layout. This meant developing an extension as a hideaway for the parents, and opening up the downstairs with floor-to-ceiling windows and a garden door in every room.

For the garden Maren designed a sophisticated outdoor space with a roofed veranda and wooden deck, which functions as a second living room during the summer.

Maren also created bespoke storage solutions based on the needs of the family routine.

“The owners love Scandinavian and Cape Cod architecture and I brought these together using white, glossy wooden floors with white wall panelling, and placing windows all over the house. The centre piece is a Scandinavian tiled stove, which warms the whole house during winter. The biggest challenge was to stretch the house’s outgrown architecture into a light and special space, combining family areas and individual retreats without losing the flow.” (Maren Lundehn, qualified interior designer)

“I HAVE A HOUSE WHERE I GO

WHEN THERE’S TOO MANY PEOPLE,

I HAVE A HOUSE WHERE I GO

WHERE NO ONE CAN BE;

I HAVE A HOUSE WHERE I GO,

WHERE NOBODY EVER SAYS ‘NO’;

WHERE NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING– SO

THERE IS NO ONE BUT ME.”
